11 Kids to Undergo Free Heart Surgery in Nigeria

Eleven kids b/w 6-12years with openings in the lower assembly of their heart will from Monday experience an open heart surgery to right the oddities.

The gathering therapeutic executive of the Garki Hospital, Dr Elijah Milner yesterday said in Abuja that the system was to help these youngsters and alleviate the weight of treatment on their guardians.

He said this would reverse the medical tourism witnessed in the country where by hundreds of billions of dollars are lost yearly to other countries offering same services.

"This is part of the free heart surgeries we started last year and this is the second phase. We are interested in giving back to the society especially the vulnerable Nigerian children whose parent cannot afford surgery.
"We have had the first session of these surgeries; this is the second and presently, we have eleven children so far and are ready to be operated upon in the next several days. And we believe that God willing, things will on successfully," he said.
Milner said the hospital was embarking on a year's programme that would see about 200 people's benefit from free heart surgeries.
"We have a team of about 12 people on ground from leading hospitals in the world working on knowledge transfer and in the next 1 year, we plan to do these 200 patients. A larger part of our population go to other countries to seek medical help, we want to tell them that the help they seek elsewhere is available right here in their country," he said.
